Foreign tourists flock to east China’s Zhejiang for unique new year experience
Foreign tourists are embracing the unique blend of tradition and technology in east China’s Zhejiang Province during the Spring Festival, as ancient towns like Wuzhen offer an unforgettable New Year experience filled with cultural charm and modern innovations.
The festival, or the Chinese New Year, marks an occasion for family reunions and cultural festivities, as well as for making best wishes.
Recently, China’s relaxation of its transit visa policy has attracted hordes of foreign tourists eager to explore the country’s rich culture.
Among the most popular destinations in this ongoing “China tour” trend are the historic cities and ancient towns of China, especially in regions like Zhejiang.
In Zhejiang’s Haining City, a scenic spot is brimming with the festive spirit.
Its lively atmosphere is enhanced by the vibrant performances of local folk dance troupes and traditional Chinese New Year food, such as the iconic “Yanqiu” – a special local dish mainly made of fish.
The round and dumpling-like dish is symbolic of reunion and prosperity, making it a delicacy on the table at major festivals.
“[The food is] very delicious, [has] very specific taste, Chinese taste. I know many Chinese dishes have a very long and ancient story from from many many years ago, right? Spring Festival is like very special, for Chinese people. So this year I know that your government makes it intangible cultural [heritage],” said a Ukrainian visitor.
In Wuzhen, a scenic town in Jiaxing City, a variety of cultural experiences, such as calligraphy workshops and interactive robot demonstrations, engage foreign tourists, offering them a chance to connect with both ancient traditions and innovative advancements in China.
“It’s my first time experiencing this kind of festival and I really appreciate the environment. It’s very beautiful. I’m very shocked,” said a visitor from New Zealand.
“I’m really happy to spend the Spring Festival here. This robot is so much fun and has a great sense of technology. Wuzhen is a beautiful place and there are so many people,” said a French visitor.
This year’s Spring Festival marks the first since its inclusion in UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in December 2024.
